Praying The Perhaps

As I move through my coursework at the New York Zen Center, I would like to share with you some of the insights that are coming forward.  I am learning that so much of what I have received over these last six years are based in a Knowing.  This story is one of these.  When you have requested prayers, good tithings or as we sit encircled, I have often sent the emoji: prayer hands, heart, prayer hands. No matter what is happening, these are the symbols that I send.  What words that go with this are: I AM GRATEFUL.  I LOVE YOU.  Amen.

In this story there is an Elder and his son.  The own a plot of land for farming.  As the Elder is getting up in years he looks over the land with his son.  He is wondering how they are going to get the land prepared for planting. A neighbor stops by and looks at the vast land and says, "there is much to do.... You will not get your land planted in time..."  The Elder responds... Perhaps."

A few days past.  A horse appears in the fields.  The Elder's son captures the horse.  The horse helps them prepare the fields.  One day as they were working in the fields the horse kicks the son in his leg and breaks it.  The neighbor sees this and exclaims... "You are never going get your fields prepared in time now! What bad luck!"  The Elder responds... "Perhaps."

The country's army is roaming the hillsides taking son as a war is approaching and they need men.  They pass over the Elder's son because his leg is broken and he cannot fight.  The neighbor says, "What good luck.  They did not take you son."  The Elder responds, "Perhaps."

And so on.

No matter what has occurred the Perhaps is our awaiting.  We are able to be in the presence of the rightness of each moment.  Even if at the time it does not feel so right.

Prayer Hands. Heart. Prayer Hands.

I Love You.

I Know This Moment is Right and Just for You.

I AM Grateful.

And All of the Elders say.... "Perhaps."
